Walnut Creek Optometry Group
Myopia Control Program
Evidence-based options to slow myopia progression in children. Call us to discuss whether your child is a candidate.

More children are developing myopia (nearsightedness), and at younger ages than ever. Higher myopia is associated with a higher lifetime risk of certain eye conditions, so slowing progression early matters. We offer multiple FDA-approved and clinically validated options — and we'll help you choose the right one for your child's prescription, age, and routine.
Treatment Options
Orthokeratology (Ortho-K / CRT)
Custom rigid gas permeable lenses worn overnight that gently reshape the cornea. Children wake up with clear vision and go through the day without glasses or daytime contacts. We fit Paragon CRT, Abiliti (Johnson & Johnson), and Global-OK designs depending on the child's prescription and corneal shape.
MiSight 1-Day Soft Contact Lenses
Daily disposable soft lenses with a dual-focus design. MiSight is FDA-approved specifically for slowing myopia progression in children and is one of the most extensively studied options available.
NaturalVue MF Soft Contact Lenses
A multifocal soft contact lens used off-label for myopia control. We have years of clinical experience pairing NaturalVue MF with the right candidates — particularly useful when MiSight isn't a fit.
Low-Dose Atropine Eye Drops
A small drop placed in each eye at bedtime. Atropine can be used on its own or alongside Ortho-K, MiSight, or Stellest lenses for a layered approach.
Stellest Spectacle Lenses
FDA-approved myopia-control glasses with H.A.L.T. lens technology. A good option for children who aren't ready for contact lenses or as an addition to other treatments.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is myopia and why does it matter?
Myopia (nearsightedness) causes the eyeball to grow too long, making distant objects blurry. High myopia significantly increases the risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma, and macular degeneration later in life. Slowing progression during childhood reduces lifetime risk.
When should myopia control begin?
The earlier, the better. Children as young as 6 can begin myopia control. Progression is fastest during school-age years, making early intervention most impactful.
How do I know if my child needs myopia control?
Signs include squinting, sitting close to screens, complaints about blurry distance vision, or a rapidly changing glasses prescription. A comprehensive eye exam will confirm myopia and determine whether treatment is appropriate.
Which treatment is best for my child?
Dr. Nguyen will recommend a treatment based on your child's age, prescription, lifestyle, and compliance. Some children benefit from a combination approach — for example, atropine drops with MiSight lenses.
Forms & Resources
We provide myopia tracking forms for parents to keep at home. Ask our front desk for a copy at your child's next visit — these include progression notes and QR codes linking to product information.
