Walnut Creek Optometry Group
Glaucoma & Eye Disease Management
Many sight-threatening conditions develop quietly, with little or no warning. Our exams look for early changes so we can begin treatment before vision is lost — and we partner with ophthalmologists when surgical care is needed.
What's included
- Glaucoma screening and ongoing monitoring
- Macular degeneration evaluation and follow-up
- Diabetic retinal exams with imaging
- OCT (optical coherence tomography) for retinal and optic nerve detail
- Visual field testing for functional vision loss
- Co-management with ophthalmologists for cataract surgery, LASIK, PRK, and lid surgeries
Macular degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration affects the central part of the retina. Left untreated, it can erase the middle of the visual field — making faces, text, and detail vanish from view. There are two forms: a slow-progressing dry type tied to natural aging, and a more aggressive wet type involving abnormal blood vessels behind the retina. Both benefit from early detection.
Cataracts
Cataracts cloud the eye's natural lens, often gradually with age. Around 20 million Americans over 40 have them in one or both eyes. They rank as the world's second leading cause of blindness — but the surgical fix is remarkably effective: removing the clouded lens and replacing it with a clear artificial one usually restores excellent vision.
Diabetic retinopathy
Diabetes can progressively damage the small blood vessels in the retina. It moves through stages — from mild non-proliferative changes to proliferative retinopathy in advanced cases — and usually affects both eyes. Tight glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol control, combined with regular dilated exams, make a real difference in slowing it down.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is actually a group of conditions that damage the optic nerve, often with rising fluid pressure inside the eye. Open-angle glaucoma — the most common form — progresses so slowly that many patients don't notice anything is wrong until significant vision is already gone. Routine comprehensive exams catch it before that point.
