Emergency Eye Care
Eye emergencies can't wait. When something unexpected happens — a sudden change in vision, eye pain, an injury, or an infection — please call us first. We do our best to see urgent cases the same day when clinically appropriate.
What's included
- Sudden vision loss or unexplained vision changes
- Eye injury or blunt trauma
- Foreign body in the eye
- New floaters, flashes of light, or a curtain over vision
- Severe eye pain or redness
- Chemical exposure
- Suspected eye infection (bacterial or viral)
- Same-day evaluation when clinically appropriate — call 925-934-4313
Symptoms that warrant a same-day call
- Bleeding or discharge from or around the eye
- New bruising or swelling around the eye
- Sudden decrease or partial loss of vision in one or both eyes
- Double vision or pupils of clearly unequal size
- A sharp feeling of something stuck in the eye
- Severe light sensitivity or stinging that won't ease up
- An eye that won't move with the other one — or appears to bulge
- Headache or nausea combined with sudden eye pain (possible glaucoma or stroke)
First aid — what to do (and not do)
If there's a chemical splash, flush the eye with clean water or saline immediately and call us on the way. For trauma or a cut, apply a clean cool compress gently — do not press hard. If blood is pooling inside the eye, cover both eyes with a clean cloth and seek care.
- Do NOT rub or press on the eye
- Do NOT try to pull out an object stuck in the eye
- Do NOT use tweezers, swabs, or any tool inside the eye (cotton swabs are fine on the eyelid only)
- Do NOT apply medications or ointments unless directed
- Contact lens wearers — leave the lens in unless there's a chemical injury that didn't flush out
